Based on more than ten years of research and practice of art therapy and dramatherapy in training, clinical practice and theory, this book is the first to explore the relationship and differences between these two disciplines.

The first part of the book explores the theoretical background and the history and practice of art therapy and dramatherapy, including accounts of the authors' personal experiences and the creative and imaginative processes they make use of in their work. The second part describes five major themes that have been practically and collaboratively developed by the authors, who clearly set out the methods and practices used. They show how images such as the body, doors, bridges, journeys and masks can be used effectively in therapy.

Press Reviews

  • The Lancet

In addition to being a 'how to' manual for art and dramatherapy, this book is a melange of autobiography, anthropology, psychoanalysis, case reports, cross-cultural analysis, art reproduction, poetry, literary quotation, and mythology.
  • Inscape

There is energy, creativeness and richness of imagery in this book...The book is well referenced and relevant theoretical concepts are explained...there is some very good sound advice...on many different issues.
  • Reform

This book breaks new ground. This is a well researched study for the serious therapist. But it is also intelligible and stimulating for the non-specialist. Throughout the book there is a generous sprinkling of black and white illustrations. It is a reference book for inspiration a well as information.
  • American Journal of Art Therapy

The authors, whose passion for their work is obvious, are creative and generous in providing a text rich in methodology for arts therapists interested in expanding their practice.
